Conrad stared at the ledgers on the floor. One had opened, revealing neat handwriting as it ticked off numbers. Then he scanned the shelves with few remaining stacks of files.

Richard Malbury had left a mess.

He had located Phinney’s cleaning basket at the base of the shelving. Malbury must have seen it. Would he assume that she had left the basket behind when she finished her work?
